I see in this case a surprising and pleasing adequacy of a very simple modelling with reality. “I like the fact that the minimal surfaces I'm studying do indeed resemble the soap films of everyday life. But curiously, the one I prefer and which seems to me to best describe practical soap films, the theorem of the existence of minimisers is not yet known, even for surfaces of dimension 2 in Euclidean space of dimension 3, with an edge that is a smooth curve,” he said. “In fact, there are many ways to give precise meanings to the terms “leaning” and “surface area”, which have resulted in some wonderful pages of mathematics. “It's called Plateau’s problem, which is precisely about having surfaces that rest on a given edge (the wire) and a minimum area,” researcher Mr David explains. In this case, the model consists in saying that these films and bubbles minimise a very simple quantity, the total area, with the constraint of leaning on a given edge, which corresponds to dipping a wire in soap and looking at the surface formed (or containing given volumes in the bubbles). A very good example, studied by Guy David, is the description of soap films and bubbles. And then to study these minimal configurations in detail. Many phenomena are governed by the minimisation of “functionals”, and the main goals of the calculus of variations are to demonstrate the existence of functions, or configurations, that minimise these functionals. What do they most often look like? On plans? With what error estimates? What can we deduce about all kinds of objects associated with these sets? It is also one of the main tools of the “calculus of variations”. One of the useful tools for the study of harmonic measure is the so-called geometric measure theory, a way to study in detail the regularity of sets in Euclidean space. The study of harmonic measure proved to be fascinating here, and also allowed a better understanding of certain problems that remained unaddressed in the classical case of Laplace's equation. The Brownian motion analogue is thus pushed towards the edge (otherwise it could pass by without seeing it!). With two other researchers, Guy David has introduced a different class of elliptic operators, adapted to domains with a much smaller boundary. Significant progress has recently been made. The way air moves (Brownian motion) is then governed by a simple partial differential equation, Laplace’s equation, which is a good model of what are called elliptic equations,” he says. In this case, the so-called harmonic measure describes the part of the lung that can be reached by air. “The question is whether the air, whose movement is described by a Brownian motion, can reach all parts of the lung or only a small part. “The lung is made to have the largest possible surface area, to allow maximum exchange between oxygen and carbon dioxide, and therefore has a multitude of cavities,” Guy David explains. A small particle of air enters it and the question is how far it reaches inside the lung. The study of the relationships between the geometry of a domain (the inside of the lung) and harmonic measure (the distribution of air at the interface) is one of the great classics of partial differential equations. If we know the air pressure on Earth at a given time, then we should be able to tell the pressures for all other times.” From there, mathematicians ask themselves three questions: Do their equations describe the nature around them? Will they be able to solve them? And once these two steps have been taken, will they also be able to resolve them practically? Harmonic measure “It is common practice, for example, to describe the weather with variables such as air pressure or temperature. “Partial differential equations represent the way we model nature,” Guy David says. The French Academy of Sciences has just awarded him the 2020 Ampère prize. Today, he is mainly interested in a concept of harmonic measure adapted to domains with small edges. His recent research concerns, for example, the theoretical description of soap films. He teaches in the Mathematics Department of the University. He is studying the geometric theory of measure, calculus of variations and partial differential equations. Guy David is a teacher and researcher at the Orsay mathematics laboratory (LMO - Université Paris-Saclay, CNRS).

7/30/2023 0 Comments Dordogne region two speciesAfter this, only sparingly has it been observed by science. Illustration of a Type D male and female (© Uko Gorter)įound in the Southern hemisphere, the Type D has first been described in a mass stranding event in New Zealand in 1955. Then there’s the almost ridiculously small eye patch, which is a great way to identify this type of orca. The dorsal fins are more pointed and less prominent. They lack a snout and the heads are more blunt. Type D’s, on the other hand, differ substantially in terms of morphology. Then there are the Types B (divided in a large and small form) and C, which subtly differ in the shape of the dorsal fin and more obviously in the positions and shapes of the eye patches, saddle patches and colour. The Type A is the quintessential orca people are familiar with. In terms of morphology, Type D orcas are very different from other types in the Southern hemisphere. Analyses of its mitochondrial DNA have given reasons to declare this type as its very own species. There are currently discussions going on within the scientific community, surrounding this type. The most remarkable of these has to be the Type D. Five such ecotypes have currently been described in the Southern Ocean. These ecotypes differ in morphology, diet, behaviour and genetics. Worldwide, orcas are being divided into subspecies, also called ecotypes. I therefore consider myself lucky that I have met these animals. Not many people have seen this unique type of orca with their own eyes. One animal which does indeed deserve this title is a virtually unknown ecotype of the orca: Type D. The rivers and the dams upstream are now a vital resource for those who depend more and more on freshwater supply including agricultural irrigation, energy production, industry and new residential and tourist demands. It’s not often for large animal species to remain a mystery nowadays. With 1.2 million habitants, the Dordogne’s catchment area has a low density (51 inhabitants per km²) comparing with the national average (112 inhabitants per km²).įor around fifty years, the transformation of rural areas in the Dordogne watershed into agricultural land and to recreational spaces has led to a spatial and social reorganization. It has an important variety of fishes (39 species) and it is especially valuable because it is the last refuge of all major diadromous fish of Western Europe. The Dordogne basin is home to a rich biodiversity of plant and animal species remarkable at national and European levels. This ecoregion is characterized by temperate coniferous forests, temperate forests with deciduous trees and Mediterranean woodlands and scrub. The transition is also related to the topographical variations between the mountain area of the source and the alluvial area of the mouth of the river. Given its size, the Dordogne watershed consists of two main biogeographical regions and one transition region: a continental region, located to the east of the basin and characterized by temperate coniferous forests, an Atlantic region in the western part of the basin in Aquitaine, characterized by temperate forests of deciduous trees and finally, between the two regions there is a transition region that is a crossroads of climatic influences and a Sub-Mediterranean and Atlantic floristic area. The river traverses a variety of landscapes and functions - mountains, hydropower, large meanders -before flowing into the Gironde at the "Ambès beak", north of the city of Bordeaux, forming the Gironde estuary, the largest estuary in Europe. Its catchment area is about 280 km in its longest part and 150 km at its widest zone. The Dordogne rises on the flanks of Puy de Sancy (1,658 m) in the town of Mont Dore, from the confluence of two small torrents: the Dore and Dogne.

The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) lamented the agreement as a missed opportunity to do more for users. It said the lack of adequate safeguards may lead to competitors free-riding on the data of other device makers and service providers. Pneumatic staples were super-helpful in assembling the wire and wood frames. I placed 1-inch PVC fittings on each side of the cabinet to bring fresh air into the heater compartment, which mixes with warm air before it enters the cabinet’s interior.įor the egg trays, I used 1-by-2-inch 14-gauge galvanized welded wire with 1-by-2-inch clear pine frames for the racks to promote good airflow. A Breath of Fresh AirĮmbryos and hatchlings need plenty of fresh air, especially close to hatch time. The temperature range from the bottom to top is now less than 2 degrees, even when the temperature outside the box is in the teens. The mat is easy to clean and stays at a safe, steady 100 degrees. To provide supplemental heat, I placed an 11-by-29, 35-watt terrarium heat mat on the floor of the unit, and that did the trick. This works well, like a forced-air heating system in a home, but I still wasn’t happy with the 4-degree-Fahrenheit gradient from bottom to top. A duct fan blows across the heating element toward the back of the cabinet, forcing recently heated air down the back duct. The duct is a “false back,” a wall of plywood enclosing a 2-inch space. Ultimately, I opted for a top heating compartment with a duct to direct the warmed air down the back of the cabinet and vent it into the bottom. First, I considered putting the heating compartment in the bottom, but common sense ruled that out because hatching waste and dander would pile up in the bottom, creating an impossible-to-clean fire hazard. I thought about ways to overcome this as I planned out the cabinet design. A big problem with operating an incubator in a cold room is the gradient from top to bottom because hot air rises, the bottom of the incubator is often several degrees colder than the top. The unit needed to be well-insulated to buffer it from big temperature swings while sitting in a cold garage, so I built a cabinet that’s a box within a box and that has fiberglass insulation. Here’s how I put together my DIY incubator (see my DIY Incubator Materials List for a rundown of the supplies I used). The self-turning mechanism isn’t used routinely, but it still works, and in case of an emergency, I can use the cabinet as an incubator once again. As a hatcher, this unit can keep up to 150 hatchlings healthy and happy. These days, I transfer eggs from one of several incubators to this unit three days before the eggs hatch. Also, it’s nearly impossible to maintain ideal, steady humidity and temperature conditions for both hatching and incubating within a single unit. It didn’t take long for me to abandon that idea after realizing that hatching is a messy process and that clean, quietly incubating eggs shouldn’t have to deal with commotion and dander fallout. Originally, I wanted a multi-stage incubator that would do it all: incubate on automatically turned racks and hatch on a stationary bottom shelf. Attractiveness that would match a nice piece of furniture.Steady temperature in an unheated garage in January.Multi-stage incubation (incubate 150 chicken or duck eggs and hatch 30 eggs at one time). When I set out to build my own egg incubator about five years ago, I had several goals in mind: I use it to hatch approximately 600 chicks of rare heritage turkeys, geese, chickens, and ducks during the January-to-June breeding season each year. I’m now satisfied with its performance, but I’ll never quit tinkering with it. Further, this homemade hatcher has undergone three major redesigns. My current homemade hatcher must be the fifth or sixth version I’ve built, though I’ve lost track of my total number of DIY adventures in incubation. It also seems like much of the time the combat just revolves around standing toe-to-toe, poking someone until they fall over. The characters can run, but have a limited stamina bar, and when it is gone, they are back to plodding about like their shoes are made of concrete. As the walking speed of most characters is somewhat glacial, being able to run away is always a good plan B, yet it is much harder to disengage from combat this time around. That facility is not there in Diablo II, and is a big omission. For instance, in Diablo III – which incidentally I did spend an enormous amount of time playing – a quick flick of the right stick saw your character dodge whatever incoming damage was heading their way. But this does mean there are things missing from the likes of Diablo III that I really miss. So, we have plenty of combat options, how does Diablo II in Resurrected form play out? Well, it appears that those behind it have decided not to mess about with the formula too much. The next run out though was focused on the Necromancer – mostly as I like the idea of resurrecting dead monsters to fight for me while I chill at the back of the battle. Switching ideas is certainly doable. On my first runthrough I chose an Amazon and built her into a sharp and pointy stick queen, able to poison enemies and heal herself with every poke. Of course, now that the Dark Wanderer is running about the place, someone has to shut him down, and guess who that someone is? That’s right, it’s us!Įvery class has a multitude of playstyles, and depending on the equipment they get, can be developed into several different builds finding a play style that suits you is all part of the fun. The animation and work that has gone into the video is amazing, and I highly recommend that you watch it instead of skipping through, looking for hands-on action. This is explained in a cutscene at the start of the game, and I have to say, the quality of this absolutely blew me away when I first watched it. This went about as well as you might expect, and the Dark Wanderer is now corrupted, which causes demons to be able to enter the world around him and generally ruin everyone’s day. The world of Sanctuary, as it is called, is in danger from the Dark Wanderer, the hero of the first game who took Diablo’s essence into his own body in an attempt to control him. Set shortly after the events of the original Diablo, the second game in the series sees us attempting to stop the destruction of the world, caused by the return of Diablo. The story of the Diablo games is always a strong point, and so it is here. 7/30/2023 0 Comments Nike air max 1 lv8Little has changed to the Air Force One since its creation in 1982, although the stitching on the side panels of earlier versions is no longer present. Knowing about these types of price gaps is good, but it’s usually doubtful that they will produce trading opportunities. They can be caused by a stock going ex-dividend when the volume is low.Ī common gap appears in a trading range and reinforces the apparent lack of interest in the stock at that time. This type of price gaps occurs in nervous markets and is generally closed within a few days. Gaps can be mainly classified into 4 groups:Ĭommon Gaps are also sometimes referred to as a trading gap or an area gap. Important events like earnings releases and company-related news that impact the market sentiment after the stock closes lead to gaps in the stock prices when the stock opens the next day. It may also occur when there is a high volume in that stock. There are not enough buyers or sellers to trade that stock. This is formed mainly due to any news in that specific stock, after the trading session.įor example, if the company earning is higher than expected, then the stock will gap up the next day.Ī gap usually occurs when there is low liquidity in the market. Ī gap is formed when the closing price of the previous days and the opening price of the next day have different price levels. In this blog, we will discuss about the basics of gaps as well as the 4 types of commonly used gaps in trading. Gaps are common price patterns that are used as trading strategies by both day traders and positional traders. If yes, the break between these two trading sessions is known as the Price Gap. Have you ever noticed a break between the opening price and the closing price of the previous day? 7/30/2023 0 Comments Giant machines 2017 first missionThe end of the world is nigh and zombie hordes flood the streets of West Point and Muldraugh. The Indie Stone's Project Zomboid has been in Steam's Early Access for roughly 10 years, and the game nowadays manages to average around 20,000 players at any given moment. Although fairly small by modern standards, Khorinis is a joy to traverse, provided someone does not mind the occasional difficulty spike. Featuring an impressive range of customization and progression options, Gothic 2 encourages players to craft their ideal adventurer, granting them endless choices in how they fight, live, and explore. NPCs feel like they are leading lives within this world, and they have their own things going on that have nothing to do with the protagonist. The central storyline is nothing all that special, but Gothic 2 shines in its minute details. Set on an island, the campaign finds the Nameless Hero going on a quest to defeat the dragons, a journey that will take them all across Khorinis. The first entry is impressive and arguably features the best story in the trilogy, but in terms of open-world design, Gothic 2 is up there with the genre's best projects. Piranha Bytes achieved open-world perfection with the original two Gothic games, so much so that the developer spent the next two decades trying to recapture the same magic, to mixed results. Outward has its share of issues, such as underwhelming combat, that could be deal-breakers for some people, but the game's open-ended structure is a huge positive in its favor. The map can be accessed in its entirety right from the start, even though some sections are obviously designed for higher-level players. Whenever heading out into the world, players need to prepare themselves for their travels as they could quickly find themselves stuck in a dire situation. Outward is all about exploration and discovery. This storyline is primarily there to incentivize the main character to begin adventuring, at least until they no longer need a reason to justify heading out into the unknown. Outward also opts against the typical "save the world" premise, focusing instead on a more mundane debt-clearing quest to get players started. For one, this open-world title incorporates survival elements like a hunger meter, and players will need to keep a close eye on these mechanics as they are not especially forgiving. While this emptiness would be frustrating in most open-world projects, Arkham City provides narrative justification for this decision, helping to enhance the immersion.Īn acquired taste, Outward somehow combines many standard ideas found in action RPGs in a way that gives the game an entirely unique feel. Arkham City's nature means its streets are mostly devoid of NPCs, except for thugs who have a date planned with Batman's fists. Armed with an impressive arsenal of tools, DC's Caped Crusader investigates Hugo Strange's Protocol 10, all the while engaging in a plethora of side content. Arkham City has no such issue, and the game nails almost everything else.Īfter being purposefully arrested and imprisoned, Batman finds himself in the eponymous Arkham City, a large-scale prison that serves as the home of Gotham's worst and most iconic criminals. An argument could be made that Arkham Knight represents the franchise's peak in open-world design, but the polarizing Batmobile sections can pull someone out of the experience if they do not enjoy them. "Immersive" is not a synonym for "realistic." Rocksteady's Arkham games do not pretend to be grounded crime dramas however, in terms of making players feel like they are the Dark Knight, they are almost flawless. Like BOTW, TOTK wants players to forge their own epic stories rather than simply follow map markers until the credits roll (that said, the 2023 game has more story-related quests than BOTW ). Link has the ability to combine items together, allowing him to create vehicles, weapons, and mechanisms to complete puzzles. In the sequel, Nintendo focuses heavily on introducing tools designed to encourage and facilitate player creativity. Even though it is not quite as desolate as its predecessor, TOTK's Hyrule still largely feels like uncharted territory that is simply waiting to be explored. This time around, the map is littered with considerably more small villages and splashes of civilization, translating to a wide range of charming side quests. A proper sequel to Breath of the Wild, TOTK finds Link traversing a familiar Hyrule that is in the process of recovery unfortunately, a new disaster has once again sent the world into chaos. Overkill as it might seem to double down on Zelda's open-world entries, Tears of the Kingdom is such a fantastic experience that it deserves to be spotlighted all on its own. |
